Dear Smithtown Music Student:

Congratulations! Based on your musical achievements, we are offering you the opportunity to participate in our
American Music Abroad Honor Bands, Choirs and Orchestras Tour of Europe for 2014.

For the past thirty-eight years, American Music Abroad has arranged excellent tour experiences for over 33,000 high school age musicians. We have enjoyed great receptions at concerts, broadened horizons and created wonderful memories for our tour participants. Most returning American Music Abroad students feel that the experience is one of the most enriching and educational of their lives.

This year's American Music Abroad Freedom Tour begins July 4 and returns to the United States on July 23.

We will be performing in and visiting France, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Our itinerary is carefully planned for exciting educational and cultural experiences. We stay in fine quality hotels throughout Europe. Some of the places that we will visit are Paris, Brugge, Koblenz, the Bavarian region of Germany, Heidelberg, the Tirolean region of Austria, Salzburg, the Alsace region of France, and Lucerne. Our concerts are often arranged by local cultural or musical organizations.

Highlights of the 2014 Freedom Tour include an evening cruise on the Seine in Paris; a guided tour of the Paris Opera House; a trip up the Eiffel Tower in Paris; a guided tour of Brugge; a cruise on the Rhine River; visits to the medieval towns of Heidelberg and Dinkelsbühl; a sobering visit to a concentration camp; participation in a Tyrolean Folk Fest; a guided tour of the musical city of Salzburg; an awesome trip via cable car to a glacier in the Austrian Alps; and a visit to Haut Königsburg Castle in France!

We have scheduled an American Music Abroad information meeting to be held on
Wednesday, October 2nd at 7:00 pm in the Commack High School Chorus Room. Please ask your parents to join you at the meeting.

The School is located at 1 Scholar Lane in Commack, NY.

SMITHTOWN HIGH SCHOOL- WEST CAMPUS

 SYMPHONIC BAND CLASS POLICY

Grading: An alphabetical grade is earned each marking period based on a student's performance in rotation class assignments, daily rehearsal classes and on exam scores.  Exams are worth 30%, rotation classes are worth 30% and daily rehearsals are worth 40% of the quarter grade.  Daily rehearsal grades encompass class preparation, conduct and participation.

Rehearsal Behavior: Each rehearsal will be conducted as a practice performance. Wearing of hats, any kind of food or drinks, lateness to class and inappropriate behavior will not be permitted or tolerated.

Course Criteria:

Performances: Performances are exams, which are calculated into the quarter grade. Attendance is mandatory for all performances.

Rotation classes: Each class represents a grade.  The grade will be based upon the completion of a given assignment.  It is building policy that students must attend scheduled rotation classes.  Should a student have a testing conflict, then a make-up class will be provided. Students are expected to communicate testing conflicts prior to their rotation class.  If a student misses a rotation class without proper notice the student will have earned a zero for that class.  All make up classes must be completed within the week of the missed class. If a rotation class falls on a student’s lunch period, the student should bring a bag lunch to eat in the rotation class.

Rehearsal conduct is expected which includes but not limited to, respect and courtesy for the conductor and respect and manners toward fellow students.

Student Success: The development of instrumental skills requires self-discipline and focused practice toward the given assignments on a daily basis, which does not include rehearsal and lesson time.

First Audition: The results are used for section seating, the Suffolk County Music Educator’s Asso.’s (SCMEA) Division 3 (9th and 10th grades only) All County recommendations and count as the first test score.
